HOTEL NIWA TOKYO is seismically isolated building, which has an earthquake absorbing mechanism supported by a state of the art science technology.

As soon as the seismic isolation device installed in the basement of the hotel detects a strong earthquake of level 5 or over, it will automatically start to absorb/minimize the quake.

The Hotel Niwa Tokyo is pleased to announce that the device did function during the March 11th earthquake, and we did feel the difference.

The theory to support the seismically isolated building was well proven and our cautious pre-planning for guests' safety was worth extra efforts and investment.

 

　　　

 

            An earthquake absorbing machine located in the basement is supporting the Hotel.

 

 

A seismically isolated structure has following features：

 

◇The building is separated from the ground.

◇A seismically isolation device which is stiff in the vertical direction and soft in the horizontal direction is inserted between the ground and the building.

◇As a result, most of the severe shaking of the ground caused by an earthquake is not transmitted to the building.

◇Even when the building is exposed to an earthquake, it moves gently, preventing the building from being destroyed, or furniture and fittings from toppling over.
